Invisible Series (2009, acrylic on panels)

Three-dimensional box paintings provide the ground on which juxtaposes figure drawings with fluid-like flows of color, suggesting various and ambiguous modes of desire. They not only challenge the normal way of watching but also suggest the unmentionable relationship between people. The artist mainly focuses on talking "relationship" - the subtle relationship between she and others, being on and under the surface, real and unreal as well as painting and sculpture. Once audience takes a close look, they are peeping into some obscure hidden relationships.

The Last Painting

Yi-Hsin Tzeng, a New York-based Taiwanese artist, is currently having her artist-in-residency at Unitec, funded by Asia New Zealand Foundation and Taipei International Artist Village. At the end of her residency, she is going to present two video works at Snow White Gallery, Unitec for Auckland audience in May.

The first piece is “The Last Painting.” She made this piece when she relocated herself to the States. The experience of living in the Southern part of America makes the artist realize that she is an Asian for the first time in her whole life. Coming from a restrict painting training background, the argument about “the death of painting” provides her a chance to search “what does painting mean for her? Therefore, she uses her last painting to portray the image of “people of colours,” challenge the traditional Asian female image and conventional way of watching a painting.

The second piece is “Pretending Conversation.” After arriving New Zealand, the iconic Maori culture catches her attention immediately and connects her unusual background, being a darker-skin tone Asian girl, whom are always mistaken as an aborigine person in Taiwan. Through the help of Maori Development Centre at Unitec, she designs a special conversation with a Maori female student. During the talk, the artist only speaks her mother language, Mandarin and the other girl responds only in Maori. Without any script, rehearsal or translation, they talk about nothing or everything. Because of the language barrier, they need to pretend that they have the ability to enjoy and carry the conversation. Therefore, talking becomes a kind of reflection, which honestly projects what talkers assume, imagine or expect about the other person. For example, the artist kept talking about her viewpoint about being the Other, Maori culture/ people; meanwhile, the Maori girl kept talking about her life, friends and family. The opacity of conversation not only generates the misunderstanding and assumption but also accidentally reveals the stereotype, contrast and the truth. Please come to see how the small talk goes funny, absurd, and aggressive.

It is really surprising and coincident that the well-known British artist, Sarah Lucas is having her residency at Two Rooms Gallery in Auckland, New Zealand right now! Continuing from her always subject matters-sex and using found objects, Sarah juxtaposes female tights, male shirts, toilets, and concrete bricks for her first solo show in New Zealand- NUZ. I always read her work on books or I nternet; actually, this is my first time seeing her works in person. I am attracted by her ambiguous but attacking self-portrait. After visiting the show, I really admire that she can deal with "cliche" in such a different/easy/direct/strong way for such as long period of time.

This is my favorite piece in the show....the portrait of sculpture!

Taiwanese! (This name is completely the same as the Wholesale store in Taipei when I was little.)

Why are Internet Cafe always run by Chinese people?

Korean!

Asian element is around every corner of Auckland....
Being an artist, who lives in Taipei and New York, my perception toward Auckland is very funny. I have so many comparisons and shifts between these three culture (Auckland<--->New York<--->Taipei) Personally, I feel Kiwi people is more similar with Taiwanese people. They don't say "How are you?" "Bless you!" "Have a good day" or "Smiling at everyone" all the time but they are nice, they do help people when we ask for help. In New York City, I only feel the Chinese vibe when I am in China town, ; however, I feel it everywhere when I am in Auckland city. Actually, it is more mixed...more Fusion Asia.

Honestly, I feel more comfortable, being an Asian or a foreigner in Auckland. People here don't look at me, like I are crazy or alien; people here understand my English more; they don't honk or curse so much. Asian people mix with other races, much more even than the States. There are about 20% of Asian population in Auckland; around 12% in New York City. After a little bite research, I found out that Austronesian-speaking people (the ancestry of Moari) left Taiwan about 5000 years ago. Besides, lots of Taiwanese migrated Auckland in the 1990s, which contributes partial Polynesian culture here. No wonder I felt a powerful bond between Moari people and Taiwan's indigenous people:)

P.S. However, this is just one-week observation from an innocent person. I may change my opinion later. Most important of all, I don't try to say which one is better.

I start my another residency TODAY. Honestly, this is my first time visiting southern hemisphere. This, "Artist in Residence Program," is under Department of Design and Visual Arts at Unitec (Institute of Technology), Auckland, New Zealand. So, I am very glad that I can get back my campus life again. I guess I need to learn some Maori language.

Besides, the residency is made possible by Asian New Zealand Foundation and Taipei Artist Village. Thank you so much!!

In 2010, I started to have interesting relationship with "BOTTLES."

In July, I painted "perfume bottles" for Watermill Art Center, Mr. Robert Wilson; in November, I was doing a commissioned project, "golden bottles" for Madwell, a women's clothing store.

Making the Leap: Crossing Borders, a group exhibition of Asian-American women artists curated by Renee Riccardo, and organized by Jee Hwang and Kira Greene.

As an international center for art, New York City attracts artists from a multiplicity of cultural, ethnic, and national backgrounds. Making the Leap: Crossing Borders features the work of 14 Asian-American Immigrant artists who confront issues of identity, separation from the familiar, and deviation from conservative social structures and gender roles with diverse perspectives and methods.The artists in Making the Leap: Crossing Borders confront the reality of their new situations by challenging preconceived notions of reality. Haejae Lee’s fantastical paintings meld the harsh political propaganda of North Korea with the Western pop culture. The work of Ajean Ryan investigates Western fairy tales by rewriting and re-narrating the stories that Ryan tells her own bi-racial daughter, while Deniz Tirpanci’s collage Dinner Party depicts multicultural reality by acknowledging the chaos, displacement and discomfort of this reality.Notions of adaptation and assimilation are dealt with directly in arresting photographic and video pieces. Arin Yoon documents the everyday lives of Korean-American women in Northern New Jersey, and Naoko Wowsugi examines language problems and stereotypes many Asian immigrants face in her humorous and compelling video Frank. Kyoung Eun Kang creates a beautiful metaphorical struggle of adaptation, as she contrasts stones sent from her Korean mother with New York City Streets. And the sculptural work of Saeri Kiritani entitled 100 lbs of Rice addresses the shocking dietary changes immigrants face.Traditional art forms and modern realities collide as the artists reconcile temporal, cultural, and technological differences. Sin-ying Ho blends customary porcelain vases and Pop Culture imagery using computer decal transfer techniques. Suyeon Na photographs herself in the public sphere of New York City, as she wears native clothing traditionally intended to hide Asian women. And traditional ink drawing collides and interacts with computer animation in Chao-Ying Lin and Yen-Ting Chung’s breathtaking video piece Nest.Four of the artists specifically address physical and gendered identity. Jeesoo Shin documents herself as a character in the Asian subculture cosplay, and undergoes dramatic identity changes that subvert traditional expectations of Asian women. Yi-Hsin Tzeng pours paint over her shaved head in her video The Last Painting, challenging her own personal physical boundaries as well as those Asian women experience globally. Yijun Liao boldly questions the roles of sex, power, gender, race, and age as she photographs and exhibits the taboo – her relationship with a young immigrant. Gyung Jin Shin also uses her body as a medium in her performance video Smiley Suicide, where Shin herself exists as a field where opposite values, meanings, and emotions meet to ultimately deny a standard or fixed identity.

Each of these 14 artists has a unique experience as an immigrant, woman, and artist. The past personal experiences and cultural dialogue these artists bring to Making the Leap ultimately express a dynamic and plural vision of what being an Asian-American woman means now.

SKIN: a multimedia exhibition

SKIN is presented as part of the 6-8 MONTH PROJECT created by Kara Walker, in conversation with Eungie Joo, as an alternative space for artists, writers, curators, and others interested in creative work that extends beyond the commercial spaces of galleries, museums, and publications. Walker opened her studio to give artists of color a space to express their work and to collaborate across multiple disciplines and boundaries.

SKIN is seamless, endless, connective, and porous. This multimedia exhibition explores the possibilities of rethinking media consumption as shared skin, evoking and awakening visitors’ senses of taste, touch, and smell through onscreen images and performance. As we collectively digest images, side-by-side embrace skin, so too do we create memories beyond the tangible experience of watching and feeling. The film/video and performance presented feature the sexually, gender, and racially queer and marginalized. They play with the boundaries of visual surfaces.

Yi-Hsin participated one special residency in Southampton, Long Island. It is Watermill Center, which is founded by artistic director Robert Wilson, an legend figure in theater. The purpose for this two-week residency is to aid its 17th Annual Watermill Summer Benefit, “Paradiso.” Duirng the residency, Yi-hsin designed a series of special perfume bottles and one performance, "Nice to Meet You."

However, he is not really our President. In Taiwan, some people hate him very much; some people admire him also very much. One the one hand, the complicated history of Taiwan resulted in his controversial character; on the other hand, he is the person who caused our controversial history. My Magazine Project is an on-going reproducing magazine project, which starts from March, 2009. So far, I already have 5 issues. They are all kinds of magazines I collect from my daliy life.
Sorry for being late...I stopped this project about 3 months in order to prepare my life after graduation. The studio space in Atlanta Contemporary Art Center provides me the woderful environment to resume this exciting project.

On my trip back Taipei in summer, 2009, I bought several authentic and popular commercial magazines as my souvenirs for my motherland. Choc (恰女生）is the first magazine in Taiwan devoted to teenager fashion and style. In my work, I mainly adapt images from two~three Taiwanese fashion or cosmetic magazines, "alter" images and then republish into a new magazine. The speciality of this issue is the usage of "Foam." This is not my first time using foam but it is the first time that I use so much amount in "My Magazine." I hope you will enjoy it!

This show presents several large-scale paintings based on Tzeng’s recent transformed image series titled, The Big Breast Calendar published by Taschen Diary (2009). The work contains nude females showing their giant breasts with affected gestures covered in part by painting patterns and strokes. Popular iconography, defaced and altered, brings questions of sexuality and the grotesque into sharp focus.

Tzeng collects large amounts of international commercial images from her daily visual environment. The action of altering and appropriating not only establishes her regurgitated aesthetics but also proclaims a regained control of the image. Minus: An Exhibition features emerging artists from across the country and from several different minority communities, including Black, Latino, Asian and LGBT. The combination of these communities verges on the majority. Works will be of multiple mediums, including painting, sculpture, video installation, performance and photography, and deal with issues of identity: gender, sexuality, culture and the body.

The opening reception will take place on June 26, 2009, from 7pm to 9pm, and will run though July 11, 2009. The studio will be open for your viewing pleasure on June 27 and July 11 from 12pm to 3pm, and for Studioplex’s Second Wednesdays on July 8, 6pm to 8pm. Viewings on all other days are by appointment.

The exhibitions department presents "Flow," an exhibition of two unique series by graduate painting student Yi-Hsin Tzeng. In the first-Box Series, three-dimensional box paintings provide the ground on which to juxtapose figure drawings with fluid-like "flows" of color, suggesting various and ambiguous modes of desire. In the second series-Trash Series, created during Tzeng's Fall 2008 New York City Workspace Opportunity, paint and foam flow amidst gritty remnants of the urban environment.

In our exciting time of political and social change, a group of Generation-X artists leave their apathy behind in order to make provocative, artistic statements. Gen-X is often called generation with little say. However, this group distinguishes itself by revealing a wide open sense of consciousness. Diverse in culture, perspective and in media, these emerging artists address key issues that permeate popular culture today. Notions of femininity, masculinity, sexuality, commercialism and a wide range of body politics are explored through painting, printmaking and sculpture. All of the work selected is vibrant and expressive. Here Gen- X’ers speak freely from their hearts, minds and sometimes their labidos. Viewers may experience some of the work as sensual, provocative and at times flirtatious. As special feature, this show includes two live painting performances on June fourth. Danny Paulete, a seasoned climber will be ascending the Peach tower of urban Atlanta while painting on canvas. His work explores primal behavior and instinct in response to physically challenging situations. The second performance, entitled, Dancing’, Swingin’ and Getting’ Our Paint On,” Deidra Tyree accompanied by other artists and musicians will be action-painting onto 3 dancers and letting the paint drip at will onto a large canvas below. On May 29, 2009, all ages and persuasions are invited to the opening reception of Split Level of Consciousness.

My first solo show in USA, welcome!

After coming USA, I focus on exploring the shape and the color of human desire. In this series, I draw images from Internet with strange positions for the front side of boxes. For the side view, I generate large amount of colorful semi-fluid to reveal these ambiguous desire underneath.

It is a shame that SCAD prohibited showing part boxes.
Their narrow standard perfectly proves my intention:
Human beings always chose what they want to see. No matter how true fact is, we still can pretend it is invisible. Even they cancel all of my boxes, I am still right here.

When I was a child, my father always told me: if you feel thirsty, just draw a plum.Then, I pick up my pen and tried to make a gorgeous fruit. I felt happy because it really worked.
I am facinated with "ambiguous illusion," using sugar-coated appearance to package dirty or disturbing contents.This time, I collected large amount of trash from sidewalk, floor, subway, trash cans or neighbors. They may be bagels, lunch boxes, paper bag, traffic sign or the cover of sewers...And then I uses "print" and "foam" to transfers them into a kind of monument.

This is not my first time visiting this big apple, so I focus on living and creating.

This summer I went to Ox-Bow http://www.ox-bow.org/, one residency on the shores of Lake Michigan. This residency has strong connestion with SAIC (School of the Art Institute of Chicago); therefore, I encountered a lot of people from there, including teachers and students. I appreciated this valuable opportunity and expected to go there again.

This time I took one course "Studio Drawing: Experimental Approaches" from Scott Reeder and Tyson Reeder. I tried several stange and exciting ways to redefine my paintings. I explored the unknown field in this unfamiliar environment. This really stimulates and provided me more possibilties.

Standing in front of the mirrior, I used my father's shave to mimic him, shearing my illusional beard.

However, no matter how hard I tried, I still could not achieve it. What I got are just foam, blood, and frustration.

Where are you from?
Everytime, when people ask me this sentence, I always feel unsettled, nervous and confused. It is really hard to convey or convince other people where or what "Taiwan" is. Because even askimg myself, I don't know where I come from.

I admit I was born in Taiwan, a familar but far away island. I had ever had strong belief in our political position, but now I doubt..

When I sat in the local elementary school and watched the Caucasian teacher taught African-American kids "Who are our American Heroes?" for the first time, I felt deeply depressed. Because I don't know who is my "Hero?" or do we believe the "Hero?"
